After five years of photographing weddings, I’m constantly seeking ways to push my creative boundaries and ensure each wedding I capture is genuinely special. That’s why I was thrilled to be part of Rachel and Brandon’s special day at the historic Boettcher Mansion in Golden, Colorado, second shooting alongside my talented friend Sarah E. Photo.
What set this wedding apart was my decision to experiment and shoot exclusively on film! It was a bit of a gamble, but I’ve always been intrigued and drawn to the timeless qualities of film and the vibe it brings, and this wedding was the perfect opportunity to experiment with this medium.
I had already met with Rachel and Brandon a few weeks prior to their wedding – we did a fun mini engagement session with them signing their marriage license with their dog Dobby! This session helped me get to know the couple better, and it was so fun getting to work with them again a few weeks later!
Fast forward to the wedding day! I photographed everything on film, using both a 35mm camera and a medium format camera. The process was exhilarating but also nerve-wracking – no instant previews or retakes, just raw shots on film. It was my first time shooting exclusively on film at a wedding, and I’m so glad I challenged myself as the results were nothing short of magical. The timeless feel of film added an extra layer of beauty and nostalgia to Rachel and Brandon’s gallery – just look at the soft tones, subtle grain, and quality of film! When I received the final developed photos from the lab, it felt like Christmas morning all over again!
This experience has ignited a new passion for film photography within me. I’m excited about the possibility of offering it as a consistent option for future clients during weddings and engagement sessions. While the journey of trial and error with the older cameras was stressful, the reward was worth every bit of it!
