So, you’ve booked your couples session, and now here’s the big question… what on earth do you wear?! As someone who has been capturing couples for the past 5 years, I completely understand the dilemma. I mean… I can’t even pick out what I’m going to wear when I leave my house half the time! If I was getting my portraits done, let alone my engagement portraits, I’d be asking the same question!!

First things first, the MOST important thing to keep in mind while picking out an outfit for professional photos is to stay true to who you are. And, of course, comfort is non-negotiable. If you’re not comfortable, you’ll be too busy thinking about what you’re wearing instead of being yourself in front of the camera.

Here are 4 practical tips to make sure you not only look good but feel comfortable during your session – let’s dive in!

1. Bring Options!

When it comes to outfits, variety is key. You don’t have to bring your entire wardrobe, but a selection of 3-4 bottoms and 4-5 tops is perfect. It’s always fun to mix and match things and work together with your photographer. Sometimes a fresh set of eyes on your options can make all the difference!

2. Practicality Matters

Wear something that makes sense for your surroundings. If you’re venturing into the snowy mountains for a winter session, dress accordingly! Not only will this keep you comfortable and warm, but it will also add a natural and cohesive element to your photos. Practicality meets style!

3. Keep it Subtle with Patterns and Logos

While fashion-forward choices are great, large and chunky patterns, as well as prominent logos, can be distracting! Opt for smaller patterns like flannels, stripes, or florals. I also encourage comparing the pattern you’re thinking about wearing to the setting of your session – if it’s a snowy or moderate backdrop with not much noise, you can experiment more with patterns, but if the background is busy, a more subtle pattern will help you stand out more!

4. Colors

Try to avoid super vibrant colors for allllll of your options. If you have a red dress or a vibrant color that is true to your personality that you’re dying to wear, you should most definitely wear it! But mixing in some earth tones and neutrals are also great – it ensures that your skin tones remain natural in your portraits. So don’t shy away from your favorite vibrant clothing, but balance it out with some earthy tones!
